How to reach Cala s'Almunia and what to expect
Getting to Cala s’Almunia may not be the easiest endeavour, but it’s certainly not an insurmountable challenge. In fact, it’s precisely this slightly tricky access that keeps the crowds at bay, a rarity in today’s Mallorca. So, don’t hesitate and set off on an adventure.
Here’s how to get to Cala s’Almunia in Mallorca: during the summer months, there’s a limited public transportation option available. However, the best way to get there is by private vehicle, either your own or a rented car or motorbike. You can also take a taxi to Cala s’Almunia, although the price will be a bit higher (depending on where you’re staying).
This rocky cove is located approximately 7 km from Santanyí. Once you arrive in this town, you’ll need to go around it and head towards Cala Llombards on the Ma-6100 road. There, you’ll find a perfect, free car park. From the car park, it’s a 15-minute walk to the beach.
Cala s’Almunia has two distinct areas: one with a jetty and small fishermen’s houses, and another with a small stretch of rocks and some sand, called Cala es Maquer. Both are ideal for experiencing the Mallorcan summer and provide a wonderful escape, albeit just for a moment, from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Activities near Cala s'Almunia
Cala s’Almunia is a very quiet area, and those who venture here are seeking precisely that: a peaceful escape. There are no amenities on this beach, so be sure to bring everything you think is essential to disconnect and enjoy some quality time in this idyllic setting. Take advantage of the crystal-clear waters of Cala s’Almunia for snorkelling, as they are perfect for exploring Mallorca’s underwater world. Plus, this cove has several rocky areas that are ideal for jumping off!
If you’re in the area, don’t miss the opportunity to visit other beautiful coves, such as Caló des Moros (one of the most famous and much more crowded than Cala s’Almunia). Simply walk around the houses on the left-hand side, continue over the rocks, and go through a wooden gate that takes you to the entrance of Cala del Moro. Cala Llombards is also worth a visit, and on the way, you’ll find Es Pontàs, the bridge-shaped rock you’ve surely seen in some photos.
How to enjoy a perfect day at S'Almunia cove
We highly recommend wearing the appropriate footwear (ideally beach booties) to be able to get down to the water safely (access is via some fairly steep concrete stairs) and to be able to walk along the rocks, as there is no sand in this part of the cove. Another top tip is to arrive early, as although the beach is not usually very busy, the car park is small and can fill up quickly.
If you’re planning to get to this cove by boat, be aware that this option is only recommended for people with a fair amount of experience, as it’s a shallow area with many loose rocks. The ideal alternative is to hire a boat with a skipper and discover this and other coves in Mallorca in complete safety.
The importance of respecting the environment
In recent years, Mallorca has faced challenges due to the high number of tourists visiting the island. Unfortunately, many of these visitors fail to respect the environment and do not protect the unique natural surroundings of this paradisiacal destination. Therefore, we’d like to remind you of the importance of environmental preservation, especially in sensitive places like an island with pristine coves.
The few who know the whereabouts of Cala s’Almunia undoubtedly cherish the beauty and purity of this place. So, if you happen to visit, please make an effort to leave no trace of your presence, minimise pollution, and protect this small piece of the island in any way you can.
Remember to:
- avoid disturbing the local flora and fauna,
- be as respectful as possible,
- use biodegradable sunscreen,
- refrain from starting fires,
- keep noise levels acceptable,
- follow designated trails whenever possible,
- clean up the beach, and
- exercise general common sense.
